It’s easy to fall down the rabbit hole of motivational videos and books. But we usually get "stuck" when searching for motivation. Because the truth is: you don’t primarily lack motivation. Mic, drop. What you really lack is clarity. To stay motivated, you first need crystal clarity on:

  • A) What you really want to achieve, and
  • B) The action plan that will take you there

Your DNA: Instant gratifications > long-term goals
Still, inspiring long-term goals are not enough to stay motivated on a daily basis. According to Strava research based on 800 million runners, people give up on their new years resolutions January 19th. Why?

Because we humans are biologically wired to want instant gratification and rewards to stay motivated. You see, before McDonalds the availability of food was highly uncertain. Humans opting for small immediate rewards increased their chances for survival and reproducing.

Lining up your dominos

Therefore we must find a way to plant an immediate feeling of success each day, even though it is too early to see the results in the mirror. You need to start seeing each daily chore as a line of dominos. Each domino has the ability to knock over the next incrementally larger domino in the line.

When you see each domino in isolation, they might seem neglectable. It is only when you zoom out that you see the value of each domino. And when you tick off all the little boxes you can today (i.e working out or eating healthy), then each day can be a success.

You are not fixated on the end goal. You are fixated on keeping the momentum of your dominos alive.

In summary, the "secret" to staying motivated:

1. Set a motivating vision

2. Create a realistic action plan

3. Track all your small wins to keep your momentum alive

Over time, habits starts to form. Once formed, you will reminisce on those days you were reading newsletters on the "secret to motivation"
